Reaction To Sicko

Insurance Industry Experts agree that Sicko Accurately Depicts A System Gone Wrong

The healthcare crisis in America gets worse every year. Michael Moore’s new film, Sicko, brings that crisis out in the open. It shows the average consumer’s fight against big insurance companies that often leaves them out in the cold – sometimes literally.

Sicko Stories Barely Scratch The Surface of Abuse

Bob Scott, an attorney with the Advocate Law Group, is an insurance industry expert who has been fighting for consumer rights for over 30 years. He thinks Sicko is a very accurate and an all too sad depiction of the healthcare insurance crisis in America today and explained, “Sicko tells only a fraction of the stories out there – it barely scratches the surface of abuses that occur every day. The truth is that consumers rarely have a fighting chance against giant corporate insurers who will do anything to deny valid claims. I’ve seen this happen for decades and it continues to get worse each year. These abuses are rampant and we see them every day at Advocate Law Group.”

A Rapid Decline

Mr. Scott says that Sicko showcases the failure of the insurance industry to meet its obligations to support healthcare in America. “In the 1950’s, we moved to a profit based model of healthcare. From there, we went to an indemnity relationship and ended up in a managed care process where third parties are substituting their opinion for what is medically necessary. Insurers do this for one reason only - to save money. The movie shows former top insurance company medical directors explaining that they routinely denied treatment and necessary procedures to the sick and were rewarded for doing so!

“HMOs are transferring their risk more every day by paying medical groups, such as IPAs (independent practice associations) and hospital chains, a fixed amount of money to treat a large amount of people. That's just wrong. They’re also increasing employer premiums which we all know end up coming out of employees’ pockets through higher deductibles and co-pays. That is the reality of our healthcare system today.”

Consumers Should Fight Back

Sicko’s release provides incentive for consumers to fight back and Attorney Scott thinks they should – in any way possible. “Consumers can prevail against insurance companies who deny valid claims or act in bad faith simply to protect their bottom line. That’s exactly why we created our firm and it’s what we’ve been focusing on ever since. We’re absolutely passionate about it.”
